XM975 "American Roland." Mounted a standard Euromissile Roland 2 turret complex on the M109 howitzer chassis. Officially adopted in the late 1970s as a response to the repeated failure of domestic tactical air defense system development and the considerable shortcomings of VADS and Chapparal. Cancelled after one air defense battalion of the Army National Guard was fully equipped with a truck mounted version (model in development), ostensibly because of cost and technology transfer problems.
