German Marder I IFV 1/100
German Marder I family of infantry fighting vehicles. Initially armed with the Rh 202 20mm autocannon and MG3 7.62mm machine gun, Marder entered Bundeswehr service in 1971. Early production versions had firing port weapons and a remote control MG3 on the rear deck, in accordance with common theories that mechanized infantry would fight mounted. The Germans couldn’t get those theories to work either, and the MG3 pod and firing port weapons were deleted on the 1A1 (late) version. All Marders were refitted to fire MILAN ATGMs from the turret beginning in 1977. The next major change was the 1988 1A3, with automotive improvements, a better heater, rearranged top hatches for the dismounts, and improved armor due to the threat from BMP-2’s 30mm autocannon and DPICM bomblets. In 2003, about 70 vehicles were modified to the 1A5 standard to improve crew survivability against IED strikes in Afghanistan. The 2010 1A5A1 saw further modifications to about 35 vehicles with air conditioning, counter IED jammers and protection for infantry using the top hatches.
